My Shadow Self Has Lessons Too
Self & Identity series
I used to fight my shadow. Pretend it didn’t exist. Push it away. Call it ugly, call it wrong, call it something to fix or hide. I wanted only the light, the polished parts, the pieces that felt safe to show.
But the shadow doesn’t go away. It lingers, waits, reminds me of the parts of myself I’ve ignored, rejected, or been taught to deny. And the truth is—my shadow has lessons I need. Hard lessons, messy lessons, necessary lessons.
It teaches me where I’ve been afraid. Where I’ve held back. Where I’ve doubted myself. Where I’ve repeated patterns I swore I wouldn’t. It shows me the edges I’ve avoided and the truths I’ve been too scared to face.
I’m learning to listen. Not to become consumed by it, but to honor it. To see it as a teacher, not a threat. My shadow is part of me. My darkness, my rage, my fear, my mess—they are all pieces of the whole.
The lesson is this: I cannot grow without facing it. I cannot claim my power without understanding it. I cannot love myself fully without embracing it.
So I bow to it. I thank it. I learn from it. My shadow is not my enemy. My shadow is my guide.
